Men's Basketball Gets Set for Division Street Rivalry

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Concordia University Chicago men's basketball (2-10) is set to wrap up its regular season with two games against Dominican University (1-6) this weekend in the latest installment of the Division Street Rivalry.

The Cougars' seniors, Joel Childers (Southgate, Mich.), Kenta Jones (Bensenville, Ill.), Justin Schwarz (Edwardsville, Ill.), Dewayne Burnes Jr. (Maywood, Ill.), Henry Flanagan (Sydney, Australia) and Jalen Meeks (Aurora, Colo.), will be honored prior to Saturday night's game for their contributions to the program and the school. With the exception of Flanagan, each senior has been at CUC since 2017 and stuck around through an overhaul in the coaching staff and COVID-19 uncertainties. They remained committed to the program and bought into the new regime, helping set an example for the younger players.

"The best way we can honor our seniors is to compete our tails off for one another and take care of business," Kollar said. "I truly believe we have yet to play our best to this point and I believe that it's coming this weekend. We need to take care of the details and battle on every possession and the rest will take care of itself."

The Stars enter the weekend searching for their first conference win of the season. Their lone victory came over Illinois College on Feb. 12, the only non-conference game on their slate. The team has three players who average double-figures, headlined by senior Jackson Smith, who is putting up 27 points a night. Jackson is also the leading assist man on the team, with over four per game. Sophomore Dylan Anderson averages a near double-double, with 12.1 PPG and 9.3 rebounds.

There is a lot of noise surrounding the weekend's games between the rivalry, Senior Night, the finale of the regular season and conference tournament implications looming large (the teams are currently in fourth and fifth place in the NACC South standings heading into the final weekend). Coach Kollar hopes his squad will be able to put all of that aside, saying the only thing that truly matters is being locked in, connected and playing their best basketball.

"We're looking forward to the opportunity to compete this weekend and continue to play at a high level," Kollar said. "Both teams have a tremendous opportunity in front of them and I don't think either team wants to stop playing."

Concordia holds a 17-12 edge in the Division Street Rivalry, including 11-4 at Geiseman. The most recent contest last February was won by Dominican, snapping the Cougar's longest-ever winning streak against the Stars at four games.

Friday night's game will tip-off at 7 p.m., and Saturday's game at 5 following the Senior Night festivities. A stream to the games will be available on the CUC Athletic's Youtube channel.
