Cougars Battle Back, but Fall to Bulldogs

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- In just their second game of the season, the Concordia-Chicago Cougars took on the Adrian College Bulldogs, looking to pick up their first win of the year.

After falling behind early, the Cougars powered through a strong second quarter to make it a two-point game. Though keeping the momentum going into the third, Adrian eventually halted CUC's offense and pulled away with the 14-9 victory.

Inside the Box Score:
  • Brett Krueger led the way for CUC, scoring three goals.
  • Dylan Mordhorst had another solid outing as well, as the rookie tallied three points off two goals and one assist.
  • Boston Dumas and Erik Allstatt led the team with two assists apiece today, while each also recorded one goal.
  • Netminder Jack Liskey stopped 18 shots, as the Bulldogs took 50 shots through the 60-minute match.
  • CUC out scored the Bulldogs in just one quarter, as the Cougars scored five goals to just two for Adrian during the second frame.
  • Adrian went 4-of-5 on extra-man opportunities.
How it Happened:
  • Concordia-Chicago jumped out offensively against the Bulldogs, as Gabriel Balcaen found the back of the net just 25 seconds into the game.
  • Despite taking an early lead however, CUC's ball movement slowed down while the Bulldogs rattled off six straight goals, to take a 6-1 lead after the first frame.
  • After the short drought, the Cougars responded and opened up the second quarter on back-to-back goals from Krueger. Krueger's surge cut the CUC deficit to three, but Adrian came back with two more goals to take a 8-3 advantage.
  • With 10 minutes to go in the half, Allstatt capitalized on a man-up opportunity and scored CUC's fourth goal of the game. From there, Concordia-Chicago found the back of the net twice more to cut Adrian's lead to just two by halftime.
  • Heading into the final 30 minutes of play, the Cougars were trailing just 8-6.
  • Adrian scored the first goal of the second half, but not long before Dumas and Mordhorst combined for two-straight goals to pull within one goal of the Bulldogs.
  • The 9-8 score was as close as the game would get for the rest of the day, as Adrian closed out the last 25 minutes of play on a 5-1 scoring run.
Up Next:
  • The Cougars will have a 10-day break before returning to play on Saturday, March 14 at Cornell College. Face off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will kick off Midwest Lacrosse Conference play.
