Cougars Show Out in Final Home Game

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- In their final home game of the season, the Concordia-Chicago Cougars relied on their red-hot shooting from beyond the arc to run away with an electric 84-68 victory over the Marian University Sabres.

Turning Point:
  • After a slow start, the Cougars trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half. However, with four minutes to play in the first, the Cougars exploded on a 20-point run and took a 40-33 lead.
Inside the Box Score:
  • With tonight's win, the Cougars picked up their eighth win of the season and recorded the most wins in a single season since the program won 10 in the 2011-12 campaign.
  • Shooting 41.9 percent from beyond the arc as a team, Concordia-Chicago had its best three-point shooting performance in over a month, last shooting above 40 percent against Dominican University back on January 1.
  • Freshman Tavarus Williams had a solid night, as the rookie picked up a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Subsequently, Williams recorded the first double-double of his career.
  • Senior Raushaun Amos hit four of nine three's tonight, recording 14 points and 11 boards. With his performance, the St. Louis native had his third double-double this season for the maroon and gold.
  • Four year player and senior Neil O'Donnell had 12 points, two rebounds, two steals and three assists in his Geiseman Gymnasium finale.
Quick Recap:
  • Struggling to find their footing at first, the Cougars scored just four points in the first six minutes of the game, all of which came from free throws.
  • Falling behind 12-4 early, Williams got CUC going as he kissed a layup off the glass thanks to a steal from fellow freshman, Brent Hatten.
  • Down 11 with 10 minutes to go in the first half, Kenta Jones sunk a driving layup of his own that pulled the Cougars back under a 10-point deficit.
  • A jumper inside the paint from Williams with 4:42 left on the clock brought CUC within four of the Sabres, trailing just 24-20.
  • With a three-pointer from Jones, Concordia-Chicago tied the game up for the first time since tip off, at 25 apiece with exactly four minutes left in the first.
  • Over those final four minutes, CUC rattled off 18 points that established a solid 40-33 lead heading into the break. During that span, O'Donnell and Izak Ruddell drained a pair of three's that kept CUC's momentum rolling.
  • The Cougars opened up the second half slow, as the Sabres tied up the game and took back the lead in the 25th minute of play.
  • Down 48-44 with 14:38 on the clock, Dewayne Burns Jr. entered the game and quickly made his presence known with a corner three that pulled CUC within one of Marian.
  • Williams helped CUC take back the lead when hit knocked down a layup, followed by a Jones defensive rebound and another Ruddell three, which put the Cougars up 52-48 at the under 14-mark. The sequence would be just the boost Concordia needed to grab hold of the lead for the remainder of the game.
  • With 10:36 remaining, Hatten knocked down a three before Amos drained two more three's of his own, allowing CUC to establish a 66-58 lead. O'Donnell would nail a step-back jumper on the very next possession, allowing CUC to take its first 10-point lead of the night.
  • Over the final seven minutes of play, Concordia-Chicago would allow the Sabres to score just eight more points, as O'Donnell closed out the night with a layup in his Geiseman Gymnasium career finale.
Up Next:
  • CUC will close out the 2019-20 season at Aurora University this Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. as the Cougars look to add one more win to their season ledger.
