CUC Shows Hot Hand in Record-Setting Victory

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- In an electric victory, including 21-made three pointers, the Concordia-Chicago men's basketball team showed dominance over Maranatha Baptist this evening, taking down the Sabrecats by way of 102-74.

Turning Point:
  • With 9:43 left to play in the first half, Neil O'Donnell deflected a Maranatha Baptist pass and traveled coast-to-coast to drain the fast-break layup, and give CUC a 21-point lead. O'Donnell's basket capped off a nearly four-minute, 19-3 run by the Cougars, who shot 6-of-7 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc during that span.
Inside the Box Score:
  • With their 21 three-pointers tonight, the Cougars set the new school record and Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference record for most three's scored in a single game.
  • 21 made three's marks the 11th most long-range baskets made in an NCAA Division III contest this season.
  • A total of 14 players appeared in tonight's box score, including Jarron Gaddie who recorded the first points of his career, totaling 12 points in 11 minutes of work. Jarron's final three-pointer of the night was the one that broke the CUC record.
  • Xeo Golding, Brent Hatten and Raushaun Amos took on a large load of the early offensive production, as the trio recorded 17, 18 and 19 points, respectively. Amos shot 6-of-9 from the three-point line and tallied three assists and five boards. Hatten dished the game-high six assists.
  • CUC recorded a season-low of 13 turnovers in the win and shot a season-best 55.3 percent from beyond the arc.
  • As a team, the Cougars dished 28 assists tonight, marking another season-best statistic.
Quick Recap:
  • The opening minutes of the game were a telltale sign of the things to come as Izak Ruddell kicked off CUC's scoring with a three-pointer followed by another one from Amos less than a minute later.
  • For the next six minutes of play, Amos would nail three more shots from beyond the three-point line, and Ruddell would add one more, to give the Cougars a 21-13 lead at the 13-minute mark.
  • With 11 minutes on the clock in the first, Hatten and O'Donnell went back-to-back on three-pointers, less than 25 seconds a part, to extend CUC's lead to 15 points.
  • Jaxon Gaddie got himself into the mix with a pull-up three-pointer with just five minutes left to play in the half.
  • From Gaddie's three, the Cougars slowed down and went scoreless for nearly three minutes, before Hatten rifled one of his five three-pointers tonight to make it a 49-32 game.
  • CUC would get the last word in on the half, as Amos drained a fast-break three-pointer to end the frame and hand CUC its largest halftime lead of the season, at 54-32.
  • Concordia-Chicago was slow to get rolling in the second, but at 17:22, Amos began a 10-0 run by the Cougars to eventually take a 67-39 lead with less than 16 minutes to play.
  • With 8:43 on the clock, Hatten went back-to-back from beyond the arc, putting the Sabrecats' deficit into the 30's.
  • Then Jarron Gaddie took over the final stretch of the game, as he nailed a three then turned around with a fast-break driving layup. With 3:43 remaining, Gaddie hit his record-breaking three-pointer from the far side of the court.
  • To close out the game, Ben Parker and Joel Childers hit baskets and elevated CUC's final score to 102-74.
Kollar's Take:
  • "Tonight was a great team win that was ignited by our defensive intensity and willingness to share the basketball. I love to see the ball moving like it was tonight, with our 28 assists. I thought we had great looks offensively and a very solid effort defensively, primarily in the second half. It makes it that much better too, when every guy on the bench gets an opportunity to contribute to the win."
Up Next:
  • The Cougars will look to win their third straight contest this Saturday in the latest installment of the Division Street Rivalry. Tip off against Dominican University is slated for 2 p.m.
