RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Looking to pick up their first CIT victory since 2011, the Concordia-Chicago men's basketball team was set to face Concordia Ann Arbor in the men's consolation game this evening. After a back-and-forth affair that came down to the wire, the Cougars were unable to beat the final buzzer and ultimately fell 67-66 to the Cardinals.
Turning Point:
- Concordia Ann Arbor led the contest for nearly 64 percent of the game, but took hold of the game's momentum when they extended their lead to nine, off a free throw, with just five minutes left to go. From there the Cougars were forced into overdrive, and would ultimately outscore CUAA 14-6 in the final five minutes before eventually falling by just one point.Â
Inside the Box Score:
- Izak Ruddell had the most complete game for CUC, as the sophomore recorded nine points, seven rebounds and three steals in his 26 minutes of work.
- Landen Gladney and Raushaun Amos once again had a big night for the Cougars, scoring 16 and 18 points, respectively.
- Senior Charlie Reznikoff came up clutch down the stretch, tallying 10 points and five rebounds, including a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe.
- Overall, the Cougars out shot the Cardinals 41.3 to 38.1 percent from the field.
- CUAA held the advantage in transition, as the Cardinals capitalized on 22 fast break points, as opposed to CUC's nine.Â
Quick Recap:Â
- The Cougars came out aggressive in the early minutes of the contest, scoring the first two baskets of the day thanks to a layup from Neil O'Donnell and a jumper from Xeo Golding.
- Three minutes in, Gladney had drained a basket from the free-throw line and extended CUC's lead to 7-1, which would ultimately be Concordia-Chicago's largest lead of the night.Â
- Over the next four minutes, CUAA's Cardinals had gone on a 10-5 tear over the Cougars and settled the score at 11 apiece, with 13 minutes remaining in the half.Â
- With nine minutes on the clock, rookie Tavarus Williams drained a three-pointer, giving CUC the 19-16 advantage. After that, the Cougars would go scoreless for four minutes and fall behind 23-19.
- After a missed three-pointer from Ruddell, with two minutes remaining, he grabbed his own offensive rebound and converted the second chance point to give CUC a late 29-27 point lead. The Cardinals picked up four more points before the half expired to go into the break with a two-point advantage at 31-29.
- CUAA would be the first to strike as the second half opened up, but Amos responded back with a three-point basket to keep the Cardinals' lead at one.
- With 17:29 left, Gladney made a layup, his 11th points of the night, to give the Cougars their last lead of the night at 34-33.Â
- Down by seven, CUC eventually would pull back within four of CUAA, thanks to a layup, and an and-one bucket, from Gladney.
- As 10 minutes remained, Amos and O'Donnell combined for back-to-back layups thanks to an O'Donnell steal, and pulled the Cougars within just three points of the Cardinals, at 53-50.
- After that, Ann Arbor iced the Cougars' scoring efforts for nearly five minutes, and had established a 61-52 lead.Â
- But from there, CUC sparked life into its offense and rattled off its 14-6 point run to pull within two points of the Cardinals with 22 seconds remaining.
- A late CUC turnover caused havoc, but Gladney responded for the Cougars and forced a CUAA turnover that he then turned into a fast break layup, making the score 67-66, in favor of the Cardinals.Â
- Concordia-Chicago had eight seconds remaining to close out the deal and struggled to find an outlet, ultimately forcing a timeout with two seconds to go.Â
- With two seconds remaining, CUC made the inbound pass and found Gladney driving to the hoop. Unfortunately, the buzzer beat the Cougars to the punch as CUAA walked off with the one-point, nail-biting victory.Â
Up Next:
- The Cougars will return to the floor on Wednesday night to continue NACC play and take on the Eagles of Edgewood College. CUC will look to split the season series with Edgewood, as they fell to the Eagles, 86-70, earlier this year.
