RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Looking to close the 2018-19 season on a high note, the Concordia University Chicago Women's Basketball team welcomed Aurora University into Geiseman this afternoon. Prior to the game CUC honored its two seniors
Kayla Horlacher and
Jessica Slomcheck. As for the game, CUC used a huge 31-5 second quarter to build up a 34 point lead. CUC then held off a late Aurora charge to close the season with a 77-76 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Michaela Thornton had a career high 20 points on the day, all coming in the first half
- Kayla Horlacher closed her time at CUC with a career high 16 points.
- CUC shot 55.88 percent in the first half.
- Crystal Corr recorded her fourth double-double of her career with a 13 point 11 rebound effort.
In the first, Aurora jumped out to an early 11-4 lead. CUC got things going with a
Sam Bloom three and a Corr Layup. CUC closed the quarter with a layup by
Jada Dixon and a Bloom three to take a 19-15 lead after the opening ten minutes.
The second quarter was the best of the season for the Cougars. CUC opened on a 11-2 run that was powered by seven Thornton points as CUC went 5-7 from the field during the stretch. The Cougars then added on with an even more impressive 20-1 run over the last six minutes. Thornton got things started with a layup, then followed with two threes. Horlacher got involved with two threes as well, both coming from NBA range. CUC took a 50-20 lead into the half.
In the third the two sides traded points early. Horlacher kept her big senior night going with two threes midway through the quarter.
Annika Rae got in on the action as well with a three with 3:34 remaining to make it 65-33 CUC. Aurora was able to close the quarter with a 13-5 run to pull within 70-46 after three quarters.
The fourth quarter saw CUC fight off a ferocious Aurora comeback attempt. Aurora went on a 25-5 run over the first 9:38 of the quarter. Sophomore Bloom was able to step up to the challenge though, knocking down two late free throws to ice the season ending win for CUC 77-76.
The Cougars close the season with a 8-17 overall record and 8-12 in the NACC. With the win CUC secured their third straight above .500 season at home by going 6-4.
