Lisle, Ill.- The Cougar women came into today's looking to avenge an early season loss to Benedictine at home. The first half displayed good and bad from the Cougars. Leading by as much as 15, CUC fell into some poor shot selection and unforced turnovers to allow the Eagles back into the game. Concordia-Chicago didn't lose all the momentum as they held a three point lead at halftime. In the second half, the Cougars took advantage of turnovers from the Eagles and shot the ball like they did in the first quarter to win by the final score of 73-61.
Concordia-Chicago came out of the gates on fire from the field. The Cougars began the game on a 9-0 with Taylor Jacobsen scoring a quick seven points to force an early Benedictine timeout. Out of the timeout, the Cougars continued to attack the rim and force the Eagles into tough shots. T. Jacobsen hit another three from the right wing and Courtney Lofink was a woman on a mission driving in the paint to get to the charity stripe. With that, the Cougars jumped out to a 16-1 lead midway through the first quarter. The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run themselves, but CUC came right back with an 7-0 run highlighted by five points from Sophia Leon. The Cougars closed out the first with a 23-9 lead over the Eagles.
Second quarter was the Venita Parsons and T. Jacobsen show. Parsons was single handedly keeping the Eagles within single digits, while T. Jacobsen continued her strong game matching Parsons. Benedictine came storming back to cut the lead to four to force a CUC timeout. Out of the timeout, Kayla Horlacher hit a three back from Chicago to put the Cougars lead back up to seven. However, the Eagles came back and was able to cut the lead to three with the Cougars leading 37-34 heading into halftime.
The third quarter came out with both teams with back and forth action and neither team really taking over. The Cougars went to a zone, which caused the Eagles to struggle on offense. Off that, Leon came back with another quick five points to give the Cougars their largest lead at eight. To end the quarter, Leon finished with a beautiful reverse layup to give CUC a 58-50 lead after three.
Early in the fourth, the Cougars got on the offensive glass and took advantage of second chance opportunities. Crystal Corr got a big offensive rebound and dished it to Maddie Vojacek who completed the and one under the hoop. The Cougars got their lead to as much as 15 with great defense forcing Benedictine into low percentage shots and transitioning that into easy offense. Concordia-Chicago was able to close out the game this time around as the Cougars knocked off Benedictine on their senior day 73-61.
T. Jacobsen led the Cougars with 22 points (8-18 FG), four rebounds, and one assist. Leon came out with her best performance in a few weeks with 17 points (6-10 FG, 3-6 3FG) and three rebounds.
The Cougars (17-6, 13-5 NACC) will return to action this upcoming Wednesday when they travel up to Madison, Wis. for their final road test against Edgewood College. Tipoff is set for 8:15pm.
