Lisle, Ill.- The Cougar men challenged themselves to come into today's game against Benedictine to not let what happened to them last time out happen again. When CUC hosted BenU back in late November, the Eagles set the tone early in their 33 point blowout win over the Cougars. The first fifteen minutes of the game, the Cougars were smelling an upset of the conference leaders. However, over the last five minutes, the Eagles went on a 20-2 run to close out the half and take a 13 point lead into halftime. Benedictine came out in the second half on a mission as they found their offense to walk out of the Rice Center with a 100-75 win
At the beginning of the half, the Cougars were playing very well on the offensive end. Concordia-Chicago were able to get out in transition for easy buckets and the ball movement was at its best. Sheldon Moore and Jalen Meeks were the key offensive sparks as Moore scored a quick ten points, while Meeks put in four in the first eight minutes to give CUC an 18-17 lead. After trading baskets, Neil O'Donnell was left wide open at the top of the key to keep the Cougars ahead of the conference leads with eight minutes to go in the first half. Later in the half, CUC were starting to go cold from the field and the foul line, unable to capitalize on easy points. Mitch Pelissier gave the Cougars a boost behind the arc, but the Eagles were able to go on a 20-2 run to close out the half to take a 46-33 heading into halftime.
The Eagles kept playing their brand of basketball early in the second half. Pelissier and Meeks tried to keep the Cougars in it, but the Eagles length were giving them fits in the post to grow their lead to as much as 19. Hassan Basbous was another player all over the floor scoring six points near the rim and pestering the Eagles players on the glass. However, Benedictine responded with the Cougars to keep control of their double digit lead. With that, the Eagles cruised to a 100-75 victory over CUC.
Benedictine shot an incredible 53 percent (36-67) from the field, including 43 percent (9-21) from behind the arc. Concordia-Chicago shot 40 percent (27-67) and only 30 percent (6-20) from three.
Moore led the Cougars with a career high of 20 points (8-14 FG, 3-7 3FG), three rebounds, and two assists. Pelissier followed him up with 19 points (6-20 FG), five rebounds, and five assists.
The Cougars (2-21, 1-17 NACC) will return to action this upcoming Wednesday when they travel up to Madison, Wis. for their final road test against Edgewood College. Tipoff is set for 6:00pm.
