River Forest, Ill.- The Cougar women came into today's game with an eight game winning streak on the line against their Division Street rival Dominican University. With a win, the Cougars would set the school record with the longest winning streak in school history. In front of a vibrant crowd, the Cougars controlled the pace after the first quarter to an easy 79-62 victory.
Within the first minutes, the Cougars jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with a Taylor Jacobsen layup and an Annika Rae three from the top of the key. Dominican came right back to take the lead at 12-10. Concordia-Chicago came right to take the lead on a Crystal Corr layup and a Lisa Lubben three. The Cougars closed out the quarter with an Allison Barry layup to give CUC a 21-17 lead after one.
The Cougars started off the second quarter very well with their defensive pressure forcing tough shots from Dominican. CUC started on a 7-0 run with a big three from Kayla Horlacher to force and Dominican timeout and extend the lead to 28-17. The timeout didn't go over so well with the Stars as the Cougars continued their defensive pressure on their full court press that led to turnovers and easy buckets for CUC to jump out to a 36-19 lead. CUC closed out the quarter outscoring Dominican 19-5 to take a 40-22 lead into halftime.
The Cougars came out of the locker room clicking on all cylinders. Jacobsen and Corr continued to knock down shots, which led to the full court press where Dominican had no answers. Courtney Lofink kept pick-pocketing the Stars guards leading to easy buckets in transition and build the Cougar lead to 55-26 midway through the third. Dominican was able to make a run late in the third to cut into the lead, but the Cougars still led 56-39 after three.
In the fourth, the Cougars came out with fire after the Stars cut into their lead. This time it was Erin Jacobsen went on a 7-0 run by herself to extend the Cougars lead back to 22. Concordia-Chicago cruised for the rest of the fourth to sweep the season series with River Forest rival Dominican with a 79-62 win.
T. Jacobsen had a game high 20 points (9-20), six rebounds, and dished out four assists. Lofink provided 13 points (5-15) five rebounds, six assists, and seven steals. Core recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points (6-11), 14 rebounds, and two steals.
The Cougars (14-2, 10-2 NACC) will return to action next Wednesday when they conclude their homestand against Wisconsin Lutheran. Tip off is set for 7:00pm.
