Cougars Shoot Down Stars In Rivalry Showdown

River Forest, Ill.- With a Division Street rival in the building, the Cougars hoped to get their first win in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.  The first half was a tale of two teams.  Right from the tip the Cougars fell behind by 13, but closed out the half outscoring the Stars by 24 from that point to give CUC an 11 point lead at half.  In the second half, the Cougars came out playing well and didn't let Dominican back into the game to win 77-63 over the Stars.

Like the game against Marian, the Cougars came out flat out of the gate with turnovers and good defensive pressure from the Stars.  Dominican jumped out to a 15-2 run mainly led by their two leading scorers in Tim Robertson and Jonny Woolf.  Freshman Jalen Meeks began the game just how he finished the last as he knocked a three from the left wing, got a steal, and an easy layup to cut the Dominican lead to six.  The Cougars rattled off a 18-1 run to take the lead at 20-18 with just under eight minutes left in the half.

The Stars quickly responded with a 7-0 run of their own, but it was all for naught.  Concordia-Chicago netted their largest lead of the game when they went on another huge 14-1 run highlighted by a quick five points from Justin Schwarz and a Sheldon Moore three gave the Cougars a 41-30 lead heading into halftime.

Early in the second half, the Stars came out on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to six and force a CUC timeout.  Both teams kept trading baskets with Henry Woo Jr. leading the way with a three and Meeks continued to knock down jumpers and get to the rim at will, but the lead remained at six.  Concordia-Chicago quickly regained the momentum jumping out to a 14 point lead highlighted by a Mitch Pelissier and one that got the Cougars crowd roaring.  CUC dominated the rest of the half in route to their first NACC win of the season with a 77-63 victory over the rival Stars.

Meeks led the way for the Cougars with his first career double-double where he finished with 22 points (9-16), 10 rebounds, four steals, and one assist.  Pelissier was next in line finishing with 20 points (8-19), and seven rebounds.

The Cougars (2-14, 1-11 NACC) will return to action next Tuesday when they conclude their homestand against Wisconsin Lutheran. Tip off is set for 7:00pm.
