Milwaukee, Wis.- Looking to build on their second five game winning streak the Concordia University Chicago Cougars took to the floor inside the Kern Center to take on MSOE. CUC struggled to find their rhythm on the night but the defense stood strong in the final seconds to hold on for the 61-59 win, the Cougars sixth straight win.
Â
"It isn't easy to win on the road in this conference," remarked head coach
Rusty Rogers. We haven't had to win many games with our defense this season but our girls stepped up on that end tonight. A sign of a good team is finding ways to win when the shots aren't falling, and that's what we did tonight."
Â
The Cougars (11-2, 8-2 NACC) finished shooting 39 percent on the night.
Taylor Jacobsen netted 20 while
Crystal Corr had 10.
Erin Jacobsen and
Courtney Lofink combined for 11 assists on the night as well. Shaylan Reardon led MSOE (5-9, 3-6 NACC) with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Raiders shot 36 percent on the night
Â
The first quarter was slow offensively for both teams. MSOE led 8-2 midway through the quarter when they were able to expand their lead to 15-6 at the end of the first 10 minutes behind eight Reardon points and seven Jamie Spanbauer rebounds.
Â
The Cougars fell behind as far as 11 early in the second quarter. Threes by T.Jacobsen and
Annika Rae helped CUC to claw back, and a Corr layup would briefly give the Cougars the lead. A final three by T.Jacobsen brought the score to 29-29 with 49 seconds left in the half, and the score stayed the same into the half. T.Jacobsen played a big part for CUC in the quarter scoring ten.
Â
CUC came quickly out of halftime on a 6-0 run capped by a Lofink steal and layup. MSOE answered through with two straight threes to tie the game at 38. The teams continued to go back and forth for the remaining of the quarter before a Raider three gave them a 46-44 advantage after three.
Â
MSOE and CUC continued to go shot for shot into the fourth quarter. The Raiders took a one point lead midway through the quarter, but
Lisa Lubben was able to convert a three off the wing to swing momentum back. With the score tied at 56 it was Lubben again followed by Lofink that helped to push the CUC lead to 61-56 with under three to play. The Cougar defense then stepped up for the remaining time, holding strong on a last second attempt by MSOE.
Â
The Cougars will play their final road contest before CIT on Saturday when then head to Milwaukee once again where they are set to take on the Alverno Inferno at 7:00pm.
