Cougars Stung By The Hornets

River Forest, Ill.- Concordia-Chicago returned to action this evening after ten days off due to finals to take on Kalamazoo College.  The Hornets came into tonight's game riding a two game winning streak after starting the year 1-5 overall.  Kalamazoo took over midway through the first half leading by 15 and didn't look back.  The Hornets went on to cruise to an easy 98-71 victory.

The Cougars were led by Mitch Pelissier who finished the game with 21 points (9-15), four rebounds, and three assists.  The Hornets shot an astounding 61 percent (35-57) from the field and 53 percent (10-19) from three, compared to the Cougars shooting 41 percent (25-59) from the field and 25 percent (4-16) from three.

Within the first two minutes of the game, the Cougars came out shooting well when Pelissier hit a three to give CUC a 7-2 lead.  The Hornets quickly responded with an 8-0 run capitalizing on consecutive CUC turnovers leading to easy layups at the other end.  After the quick surge, the pace of play started to favor the Hornets.  Kalamazoo jumped out to a five point lead midway through the half, but turnovers for the Hornets allowed the Cougars to come back and take a one point lead.

Concordia-Chicago suddenly went cold from the field and Kalamazoo took advantage of it.  The Hornets went on a 12-0 run before Jarek Hotwagner hit a jumper to cut the lead to nine with five minutes left in the first half.  Kalamazoo continued to force the Cougars into tough shots on defense and were able to extend their lead to 46-31 heading into halftime.

Early in the second half, the Hornets came out on fire from the floor.  Kalamazoo was able to shred the Cougars defense with great passing around the perimeter for easy threes to extend their lead to 58-34.  The Cougars would not go away however, responding with a 13-2 run highlighted by an Israel Dosie and one to cut the Hornets lead to 15.  Concordia-Chicago couldn't cut the lead further, turnovers and missed shots allowed Kalamazoo to again extend their lead to 22 midway through the second half.  The Hornets continued to dominate offensively winning by the final score of 98-71.

The Cougars (1-6, 0-4 NACC) will return to action this Saturday when they welcome the Edgewood College Eagles to Geiseman Gymnasium.  Tip off is set for 2:00pm.
