Feb. 21, 2016 -Â The final regular-season game for the Concordia-Chicago women's basketball team saw them with a chance to avenge a frustrating defeat from last month. However, the Concordia University Wisconsin team had other ideas. The Falcons used a big third quarter to break open a close game, and they went on to an 87-71 win over the Cougars in Mequon, WI.
The Cougars had the better of play in the early going. A basket by
Hannah Rummel (Fenton, MI/Lake Fenton) and two byÂ
Angelik Young (Crete, IL/Crete-Monee) staked CUC to a 6-2 lead beforeÂ
Courtney Lofink (Orange, CA/Orange Lutheran) buried a three for a seven-point edge. The Cougars were still up by six, 18-12 onÂ
Sarah Smith's (St. Ignace, MI.LaSalle) layup with 3:47 remaining before the Falcons went on a 16-3 run to close the quarter. Taylor Delong's three-point play gave CUW a 22-21 lead, and she also added the final two baskets to put the Falcons up 28-21 after 10 minutes of play.
Early in the second quarter, the hosts extended their lead to nine before the Cougars battled back.Â
Morgan Jahnke (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community)Â scored a couple of baskets as CUC chipped away. Four times, the Cougars got to within a single point, the last at 39-38 on Young's basket. The Falcons rebounded over the closing minutes, butÂ
Lauren Orr's (O'Fallon, MO/Lutheran St. Charles)Â basket and Lofink's free throw made the halftime score Falcons 45, Cougars 41.
Three minutes into the third quarter, it was back to a one-point game at 49-48 after Jahnke converted a three-point play. However, the Falcons then hit the Cougars with a 19-1 blitz over the next five minutes, aided by a succession of CUC missed shots and free throws. Jahnke finally ended the run with a layup, and Rummel added a three moments later, but the Cougars still found themselves trailing 75-54 after three.
The Cougars came back to hold the Falcons to just 3-12 shooting in the fourth. However, the home team was able to knock down some free throws in the quarter, and the Cougars were unable to generate enough offense to overcome the huge deficit. The closest CUC would get was 14 points (81-67) with 2:$6 left on Lofink's layup.
Concordia-Chicago was led by Jahnke with 16 points and seven assists, followed by Young and Lofink with 14 each, and Rummel with 11. Lofink also finished with seven rebounds and four assists, the latter giving her a conference-leading 140 assists. The sophomore also led the NACC in steals with 103. Jahnke averaged 12.5 points for the season, finishing tenth in the conference while Young finished 11th in assists with a 6.2 average.
The Cougars finished the season 10-15 overall, 8-12 in conference play. Head coachÂ
Rusty Rogers has most of his roster eligible to return but will bid farewell to seniors Jahnke, Rummel, Young andÂ
Kristen Shimko (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield North).Â
