Jan. 16, 2016Â - Looking to recover after a tough shooting performance earlier in the week on the home floor, the Concordia University Chicago Cougars found themselves in too deep of a hole after many long scoring droughts and turnovers in Saturday's game at Geiseman Gymnasium. The Milwaukee School of Engineering forced 31 Cougar turnovers on their way to a 76-60 win.
MSOE jumped to the early 7-2 lead before
Lauren Orr (O'Fallon, MO/Lutheran St. Charles)Â hit a short jumper. However, the Cougars ran into one of their longest scoring droughts of the season in not hitting another field goal for the rest of the quarter.
Morgan Jahnke (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community)Â converted two free throws late in the quarter, but the home team trailed by 11 after one.
The Cougars continued to struggle in quarter number two.
Courtney Lofink (Orange, CA/Orange Lutheran)Â turned her own steal into a fastbreak layup for the Cougars' first field goal since just over seven minutes remaining in the first. Orr knocked down a three to try and keep the Cougars close, but the Raiders were having their way, plundering their way to a 21-point lead during the quarter.
Angelik Young (Crete, IL/Crete-Monee)Â hit a layup late to bring the Cougars within 17 at the halftime break.
Jahnke would lead CUC with eight points at the half. The Cougars had arguably Their roughest first-Â half performance of the season, shooting just 23 percent from the field and turning the ball over 18 times. Holly Denfeld led MSOE with 12 points with the Raiders shooting 53% from the field and an even better 57% from three.
The third quarter would be the best for the Cougars. Six straight points by Young would get the Cougars back within 13. An Orr three and a
Sheyla Kahalehoe (Kalihi, HI/Iolani)Â jumper closed out the quarter that saw the Cougars outscore the Raiders 21-16, but still trail by 11 after three.
The Cougars tried to continue the momentum into the fourth quarter, but the Raiders stood up to the challenge. CUC would get no closer than 13 points at any point in the quarter. Strong free-throw shooting by the Raiders would keep the Cougars from getting any sort of comeback started.
Jahnke finished with 12 points for CUC, Young with 11 and Orr with 10. The Cougars turned the ball over 31 times in the game and shot just 21 percent from three. Megan Kroll and Denfeld would combine for 47 points, and MSOE (11-4 9-1 NACC) would shot 47 percent for the game.
The Cougars (6-8 4-6 NACC) will return to action against Alverno College in Milwaukee on Tuesday night. The Cougars will look for a season sweep of the Inferno after they took game one of the series 84-78 at Geiseman on Nov. 28.Â
