CUC Women's Defense Downs Dominican

Dec. 19, 2015 - The Concordia-Chicago women's basketball team headed into this final week of play before a Christmas break looking to right the ship after a three-game skid against Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opponents had left them at 2-3 (1-3 NACC). A Tuesday night non-conference win against Lawrence University began the reversal, and this afternoon's 91-77 win against crosstown NACC rival Dominican University put CUC back above water with a 4-3 record overall.
The Cougars needed just three minutes to get into an offensive rhythm for the game. Leading 4-3, Lauren Orr (O'Fallon, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) canned a three from the left wing. After a steal. Erin Jacobsen (Aurora, IL/West Aurora) got inside for a three-point play for a 10-3 lead. Later in the quarter, Hannah Rummel (Fenton, MI/Lake Fenton) provided a spark with five points including her tfirst three of the season. The Cougars shot 13-24 for the quarter and led 33-23 after one.
Dominican began the second quarter on a 7-0 run before Sheyla Kahalehoe's (Kalihi, HI/Iolani) jumper got the Cougars back on the board. Concordia-Chicago maintained its lead throughout the rest of the half, but Dominican stayed close and got within four before Erin Jacobsen answered with a three. The Cougars resumed going to the basket aggressively as Angelik Young (Crete, IL/Crete-Monee) hit a jumper, and Taylor Jacobsen (Aurora, IL/West Aurora) hit two free throws before the halftime buzzer. CUC led at the half 51-42.

Courtney Lofink's (Orange, CA/Orange Lutheran) layup gave Concordia-Chicago a 57-47 lead early in the third before the team hit a dry spell. Dominican rose up and scored the next 10 points with Jasmyn Hardin scoring twice on putbacks to lead the surge. Kahalehoe ended this run with a three, but DU's Allie Tapanes and Shamia Clark answered with consecutive threes as the Stars took the lead for the first time since the early minutes of the game. The Cougars stayed close over the final minutes of the third quarter as Miranda Rogers (Cypress, TX/Houston Christian) hit a clutch three, and Taylor Jacobsen scored in the final seconds to trim the home team's lead to 70-69 entering the final 10 minutes.

In the fourth, the first seven points went to CUC, beginning with Lofink's 15-foot jumper. Orr added her second three of the day, and Morgan Jahnke (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) hit two free throws for a 76-70 lead. The Stars crept back to within two, but two free throws by Erin Jacobsen and another three by Rogers began to push momentum further to the Cougars' side. The Stars shot just 3-15 from the field for the quarter and missed all six of their threes after canning four long ones in the third when they had taken the lead. The Cougars made sure that this opportunity did not slip away, and two three-point plays by Taylor Jacobsen and Jahnke, the latter coming with 2:34 left, gave CUC a 12-point lead and locked up the game.

The Cougar bench was outstanding today as they finished with a combined 51 points including Taylor Jacobsen's game-high 17, Erin Jacobsen's 11 and Rummel's 10. Among the starters. Jahnke was in double figures with 13 points. Lofink added 12 points, but her eight assists and six steals demonstrated her overall contribution to today's win. CUC won the boards today by a 41-39 margin (Young leading CUC with seven), and the Cougars were excellent at the free throw line in hitting 17 of 19.

Concordia-Chicago will break for Christmas before flying to California on Dec. 26 and preparing for two games hosted by Whittier College.
