Cougar Women Boarded Up in Loss to Warriors

Dec. 12, 2015 - The Concordia-Chicago Cougars faced a tough challenge this afternoon in trying to snap a two-game skid. Wisconsin Lutheran College came into today's game at 3-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. The Cougars gave the hosts a good battle, but the Warriors' offensive rebounding ultimately decided the game in a 71-62 final.
The Warriors took an early 7-2 lead as a couple of turnovers caused the Cougars to start slowly on offense, but Courtney Lofink's (Orange, CA/Orange Lutheran) steal resulted in a Morgan Jahnke (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) layup. Moments later, Lofink canned a three and then slipped a pass inside to Angelik Young (Crete, IL/Crete-Monee) for a 9-7 lead. WLC scored the next four points, but Sheyla Kahalehoe's (Kalihi, HI/Iolani) layup tied 11-11. The Cougars played their normal aggressive defense, forcing six turnovers and finished the first quarter trailing by a single bucket at 13-11.

Early in the second quarter, Jahnke's steal and layup tied the game at 17-17.  The teams then traded baskets before Jahnke's two free throws gave CUC a 21-19 lead. However, two threes by Carisa Pedersen triggered an 8-1 run before Taylor Jacobsen (Aurora, IL/West Aurora) hit one from downtown to slow the run. However, Pedersen soon hit her third trey of the quarter, and CUC trailed 33-25. Lauren Orr (O'Fallon, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) got three points back as she was fouled and hit all three free throws, but Pedersen hit a baseline jumper to beat the buzzer, and the Warriors left the Court holding a 35-28 lead.

Concordia-Chicago's defense held the hosts to 15-39 shooting in the half, but Wisconsin Lutheran's 13 offensive rebounds and 27-11 edge overall enabled them to overcome some of the misses.

Early in the third, the Cougars fell behind by 11, but a layup by Hannah Rummel (Fenton, MI/Lake Fenton) and threes by Kahalehoe and Lofink got CUC back to within 41-38. Jahnke made two free throws to make it a 10-0 run. Over the next few minutes, the Cougars had three chances to take the lead, but three turnovers denied CUC from doing so. Wisconsin Lutheran then hit Concordia-Chicago with a 6-0 run to go back up by seven. However, CUC got up off the floor and closed the gap to four by the end of the quarter as Orr hit a three from the top of the key.

The fourth quarter was a frustrating one for CUC as they remained close but could not get back over the hump. Lofink's steal and layup put the Cougars within 57-55, but WLC's Taylor Bahr (14 points) hit a big three. Moments later, Pederson drilled another three as the Warriors asserted control over the final few minutes.

Jahnke finished with a solid line of 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. Orr added 12 points, and Lofink chipped in with 10 points, seven assists and three steals.

The Cougars (2-3, 1-3 NACC) will take a break from conference play when they travel to Appleton, WI for a game against Lawrence University on Tuesday night.
