Sharp-Shooting Sabres Cut Down Cougar Men

Box Score
Feb. 2, 2013 - A fine display of shooting by host Marian University sent the Concordia-Chicago men's basketball team down to an 81-64 defeat this afternoon at Sadoff Gymnasium in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
The Cougars fell behind 7-0 before Khirey Floyd's (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park-River Forest) three from the right wing put the visitors on the board. Concordia chipped away, and Floyd's second three soon brought the Cougars to within 14-12.
Marian maintained the lead with some deadly accurate three-point shooting. The Sabres made five of their first seven, and back-to-back treys by Alex Stecker and Sam Koslowski gave the hosts a 29-20 lead at the eight-minute mark.
Concordia soon warmed up with the threes as Joel Kosberg (Anthem, AZ/Valley Lutheran) connected from the left wing. Moments later, Floyd hit from the identical spot for his third triple of the game.
The Sabres responded as Jake Coenen hit a long three and came back moments later for a three-point play underneath the basket. Marian finished the half with the momentum as they took a 43-30 lead into the locker room.
The home team hit on 15 of 26 shots overall from the field including 6-9 from behind the three-point line. Concordia made 10 of 26, 4-12 from beyond the arc. Floyd finished the half with 15 points on 5-8 shooting (3-5 threes) and 2-2 from the charity stripe.
Marian opened up the lead at the beginning of the second half. Once again, three-point shooting did the damage as Alex Stecker hit a pair in the first minute. Later, Sam Koslowski's three gave the Sabres a 20-point lead at 56-36.
The Cougars did not go quietly as they soon cut the lead nearly in half. Brandon Stinson's (Schiller Park, IL/East Leyden) three-point play touched off the 11-2 run. Two free throws and a layup by Brandon Johnson (Chicago, IL/Gordon Tech) sandwiched around a basket by MU's Alex Gomez. Stinson scored on a fast break and, moments later, Tyler Oden (Chicago, IL/Marist) made two free throws to make the score Marian 58, Concordia 47 with 12 minutes still to play.
Brad Koth's three broke the Cougars' momentum momentarily, but two free throws by Johnson and a jumper by Joe Pearson (Chicago, IL/St. Francis de Sales) sliced the deficit down to 10. However, that was as close as Concordia would come. A layup by Mike Keller, jumper by Cody Veleke and another three by Koth stretched the lead back out to 17, and the Cougars got no closer than 15 points over the final eight minutes.
The Sabres shot over 50 percent again in the second half as they wound up the game with 30 of 54 for 56 percent. Their three-point shooting finished at 11 of 20 for 55 percent. Veleke led the Sabres' scoring despite no threes; the 6'5" forward shot 9-15 from the field for 18 points. Marian's next three scprers all hit three triples - Coenen with 12 points, Koslowski with 12 points and Stecker with 11.
For Concordia, Floyd led the way with 19 points and seen rebounds; the Cougars' 6'4" senior now has averaged 21.3 points over his last four games. Stinson added 12 points on 5-8 shooting from the field.
The Cougars (2-20, 2-11 NAC) will play their final three games of the regular season at Geiseman Gymnasium, beginning with Wednesday's contest against Dominican University.
