Cougar Women Denied on Eagles' Clutch Free Throws

Dec. 17, 2013 - A combined 48-point, 17-rebound effort by Concordia-Chicago's Jessica Genke (Kiel, WI/H.S.) and Angelik Young (Crete, IL/Crete-Monee) was not enough to get the Cougar women's basketball team over the hump in tonight's contest against Benedictine University. Clutch free-throw shooting by the Eagles in the final minute erased the Cougars' valiant comeback from a 13-point second-half deficit and enabled the hosts to survive by a final score of 76-72. The result sent the Cougars down to 0-7 on the season, 0-6 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
In the early going, all of CUC's offense came from within 12-13 feet of the basket. Young finished off three opportunities around the basket, and Genke made good on a couple of baseline jumpers. But the Eagles soon took over the lead as they began to capitalize on opportunities in the lane. Benedictine's three-point shooting (3-4) kept the CUC defense honest, but the Eagles' guards did the majority of damage inside. The hosts took their largest lead of the half at 38-25, but a free throw by Young and a layup at the buzzer by Morgan Jahnke (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) trimmed the Cougars' deficit to 10 points.
Still trailing by 10 in the second half, Concordia made its move. Aggressive play on offense forced the Eagles into early foul trouble, and the Cougars reached the bonus by the 12:50 mark. A three-point play by Jahnke knocked the lead down to seven. Genke then scored the Cougars' next eight points including a 10-foot jumper at the 9:28 mark that gave CUC its first lead since the early minutes of the game at 58-57.
The lead exchanged hands over the next several minutes as the Eagles' Meghan Novak (20 points) and Vincenza Ranallo (18 points) held the hot hands. Benedictine took a 69-67 lead down the stretch before April Broska (Belleville, MI/Lutheran South) hit three free throws - two of them coming with 1:31 remaining - to give Concordia a 70-69 lead. Alanna Ferry answered with a jumper in the lane, but Broska struck again as she finished off a nice pass from Jahnke to give CUC its final lead at 72-71 with just under a minute to play.
Benedictine missed its next shot, but Ferry snagged the rebound and was fouled. She hit both free throws to put the Eagles up by one. The Cougars then worked for the go-ahead shot, but a critical over-and-back violation - one of only eight CUC turnovers - gave the ball back to the Eagles. Forced to foul, the Cougars put Briana Hamilton at the line. Hamilton hit her only two free throws of the game to put Benedictine up three. Concordia-Chicago went for the quick two, but the shot was blocked and the loose ball recovered by Benedictine. A final free throw accounted for the Benedictine margin of victory.
Genke tied her season-high mark in scoring with 29 points on 10-17 shooting and a perfect 9-9 at the line. The 5'11" senior also recorded nine rebounds and three blocks. Young hit her career-high of 19 points (8-14 FG, 2-4 3FG, 1-2 FT)while adding eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jahnke, playing against her former team for the first time, recorded seven points, seven rebounds and six assists.
The Cougars will conclude their pre-Christmas conference schedule on Saturday with a 4:15 tipoff at Rockford University.
