Cougar Men's Late Charge Turned Away by Rockford

Box Score
Jan. 29, 2013 - Some hot three-point shooting by host Rockford College and some untimely turnovers by Concordia University Chicago were just two of the factors in a 78-64 Cougars' loss on Tuesday evening. The loss was the Cougars' fifth straight and prevented them from winning the season series against their division opponent.
The two teams came out firing threes. Brandon Stinson (Schiller Park, IL/East Leyden) and Khirey Floyd (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park-River Forest) found the range for the Cougars while Scott Suchy nailed a pair for the Regents. Concordia then attacked the basket on a couple of possessions. Taylor Rawlings (Rochester Hills, MI/Stoney Creek) knocked down a pair of free throws, and Stinson split a pair as the Cougars took their first lead of the night at 14-13.
Concordia then hit a rough patch after Suchy scored on the break to put Rockford back into the lead. A string of a half-dozen turnovers allowed the Regents to go on an 11-0 run and build their lead to double digits. Rockford remained steady on the three-point shooting as Tory Minnifield and John O'Bryan made good from beyond the arc.
Floyd finally ended the hosts' run and helped the Cougars back into the game by scoring CUC's next 10 points. Tyler Oden (Chicago, IL/Marist) nailed a three just before the break, and the Cougars went into the half trailing by only six points at 40-34.
The Cougars scored the opening basket of the second half but were unable to generate any consistent offensive rhythm over the next several minutes. Minnifield and O'Bryan found the target again from the outside, and Concordia's deficit widened to 57-41 at the 11:47 mark.
Trailing by 21 with eight minutes remaining, Concordia made a late push. The Cougars attacked inside and got baskets by Floyd, Brandon Johnson (Chicago, IL/Gordon Tech) and Marcus Elston (Chicago, IL/Benito Juarez), along with two free throws by Floyd. Aurtiro Houston (Chicago, IL/Crane) then nailed a three from the left wing to chop the deficit down to 10 points at 67-57.
Floyd scored at the 2:26 mark to make it an eight-point game, but Suchy scored the Regents' next six points including a three with 1:12 left that finally closed the door on the Cougars' chances.
Rockford (8-13, 6-6 NAC) shot 48 percent for the game on 27 of 56 and made good on a season-high 10 three-pointers to keep Concordia at bay. Suchy led the way with 26 points on 9-14 from the field (2-4 threes) and 6-7 from the free throw line. Minnifield finished with 4-7 shooting from behind the arc and 19 points total. O'Bryan also canned four threes as part of a 16-point performance, and David Dixon chipped in with 11 points.
Concordia (2-19, 2-10 NAC) shot just 35 percent from the field on 21 of 60 and six of 17 threes. The Cougars also struggled from the foul line with 16 of 25 for 64 percent. Floyd's production remained high with a 22-point effort on 8-14 from the field; the senior forward also pulled down nine rebounds. Rawlings finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Cougars captured a slim 39-37 advantage over the Regents on the boards.
The Cougars will play at Marian University in Fond du Lac on Saturday afternoon as part of a women's/men's doubleheader.
