Loras Rains Down Threes to Beat Cougar Men

Box Score Nov. 24, 2012 - The Concordia-Chicago men's basketball team ran up against another sharp-shooting opponent this afternoon in Loras College. The Duhawks shot a sizzling 60 percent (18-30) from behind the three-point arc in recording an 85-67 victory that dropped the Cougars to 0-4 on the season.

Baskets by Alphonso Dunbar (Bellwood, IL/Walther Lutheran), Marlin Vilius (Eustis, FL/H.S.) and Masson Prowse (Sacramento, CA/Rio Americano) gave the Cougars an early 6-3 lead. However, the Duhawks scored 12 consecutive points to take a lead they would never relinquish. Concordia clawed within 23-21 at the midway point of the half on Marcus Elston's (Chicago, IL/Benito Juarez) jumper, but the hosts responded with a second 12-0 run to boost their lead to the mid-teens. Loras led at half by a 44-31 score.

The Duhawks used the long ball to pull away in the second half. They made good on 11 of 14 shots (79 percent) from behind the arc. Loras made five of six threes at one point, two each by Connor Mooney and Nathaniel Smith to stretch their lead to 64-43, and Concordia was unable to cut into the lead significantly from that point.

Brandon Johnson (Chicago, IL/Gordon Tech) and Prowse led Cougar scorers with 12 points each. Johnson shot 3-7 from the field and hit all six of his free throws, giving him a current streak of 27 made free throws going back to last season. Prowse shot 5-7 from the field, 2-2 at the line and pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds. Mooney led the Duhawks (2-2) with 16 points including 4-5 shooting from long range.

The Cougar men will host Benedictine University Nov. 27 at 7 p.m.
