Bruce Tuomi, ’77 – Tuomi lettered four years in wrestling and two years in baseball. He was a three-time NAIA national qualifier in wrestling at the 167 weight class, a two-time NAIA district champion and an NIIC conference champion. Tuomi is among Concordia’s top all-time wrestlers with 78 wins and 34 pins, and his numbers in both categories as a freshman (22 wins, 11 pins) set school records. Following graduation, he taught and coached at Lutheran East High School in Harper Woods, Michigan from 1976 to 2000 where he earned 14 Metro Conference Coach of the Year honors and two Regional Coach of the Year honors. Among his team’s honors were 14 consecutive conference championships, seven Michigan High School Sports Association district championships and three MHSSA regional championships.
Tuomi earned his B.A. in education from Concordia and his M.S. in physical education from Eastern Michigan University in 1980. He currently serves as athletic director and coaches wrestling and football at Walther Lutheran High School in neighboring Melrose Park.
