Sept. 25, 2012 - The Concordia women's tennis team gave Valerie Medina her first victory as head coach this afternoon with a 6-3 decision at Rockford College.
The match began with the Cougars grabbing a 2-1 lead in doubles play. The first team of
Deanna Richardson (Bellwood, IL/Walther Lutheran) and
Abby Matayka (Arlington Heights, IL/Rolling Meadows) pitched an 8-0 shutout over Jessica Sagalla and Carla Ramirez. The third team of
Kristy Heimsoth (Milwaukee, WI/Martin Luther) and
Becca Lamanna (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park), newly paired within the last week, took an 8-4 win over Shannon Hoppes and Marah Erbe.
Richardson and Matayka continued their hot play of recent days by posting wins in singles. Richardson defeated Segalla 6-1 and 6-0 at first, and Matayka bested Ramirez 6-2 and 6-3. Heimsoth and
Molly Maas (Pewaukee, WI/H.S.) lost their matches at third and fourth respectively, but the Cougars earned two big insurance points at fifth and sixth.
Hannah Kaul (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa East) outlasted Hoppes in an exciting 6-4, 1-6, 10-4 match at fifth. Lamanna topped Lyla Gao 6-2, 6-2 at sixth to round out a successful day for the Cougars.
Concordia (1-10, 1-9 NAC) will go for two in a row on Friday afternoon when they take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
