Sept. 16, 2012 - The Concordia Cougars' women's tennis team dropped three Northern Athletics Conference matches on the home courts this weekend. Saturday's matches went to Lakeland College by a 5-4 score and Marian University by a 7-2 score. On Sunday afternoon, it was Edgewood College that beat the Cougars by an 8-1 score.
The Cougars' first doubles team of
Deanna Richardson (Bellwood, IL/Walther Lutheran) and
Abby Matayka (Arlington Heights, IL/Rolling Meadows) scored two of Concordia's six points at first doubles. They defeated April Schmitz and Lynn Pipke of Lakeland 8-6 and Ann Goyke and Brynn Hartzell of Marian 8-3.
Richardson went 3-0 in her weekend matches at first singles. She defeated Lakeland's Schmitz 6-4, 6-3 and Marian's Goyke 6-2, 6-2. But perhaps her most impressive win was a hard-fought win over Laura Olsen of Edgewood. Richardson lost the first set 6-4 but battled back tenaciously to win 7-6 (9-7) in set two and 10-6 in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Matayka picked up a win at second singles over Lakeland's Jenna Oberthaler 6-3, 7-6 (12-10
). Molly Maas (Pewaukee, WI/H.S.) accounted for Concordia's other point at fifth singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alissa Stephani of Lakeland.
The Cougars will make up an earlier postponed home match against Aurora University on Tuesday afternoon.
