Sept. 28, 2012 - The Concordia Cougars' oppportunity for a second victory this week was dimmed by the Milwaukee School of Engineering in this afternoon's Northern Athletics Conference match. The Raiders took three straight victories in singles before darkness settled in, and the visitors claimed a shortened 5-2 victory.
The match began almost a half-hour later than the scheduled 3:30 start due to Friday afternoon traffic around the Chicago area. Once play began, the visitors took two of the three doubles points. The Cougars' first team of
Deanna Richardson (Bellwood, IL/Walther Lutheran) and
Abby Matayka (Arlington Heights, IL/Rolling Meadows) won their match 8-4 over Marli Trier and Michelle Roubik. However, the Raiders reversed that score in second doubles, Heather Miller and Michelle Avery defeating
Molly Maas (Pewaukee, WI/H.S.) and
Hannah Kaul (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa East). Third doubles went to MSOE by an 8-1 score, Ashley Albrecht and Emily Dvorsky beating
Kristy Heimsoth (Milwaukee, WI/Martin Luther) and
Becca Lamanna (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park).
In singles play, Kaul notched Concordia's lone victory at fifth with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. But MSOE claimed points at third, fourth and sixth. Miller defeated Maas 6-0, 6-1 at third; Albrecht edged Heimsoth in an exciting 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 battle at fourth, and Dvorsky won 6-3, 6-3 over Lamanna at sixth.
Richardson and Matayka had their matches at first and second respectively cut short by darkness. Richardson had won her first set and Matayka lost her first set in a tiebreaker. The matches will not be completed since MSOE had the required amount of team points to make the match official.
The Cougars will return quickly to action when they host Mount Mary College Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
